Role of Varmam Maruthuvam in the management of Thokkaminmai (Insomnia) - A Case Report

Aim and objective: To improve the quality of life in insomnia patient. Introduction: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that affects an estimated 30% of the general population. It is characterized by difficulty with sleeping, which may include falling asleep, maintaining sleep, or a combination of the two. It often leads to fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Women are affected more commonly than men, and it increases in both sexes with age. It frequently prescribes sedative and hypnotic like benzodiazepines drugs as a therapy of insomnia. As the number of people who suffer from insomnia rises, there is an increased interest in complementary and alternative medicines. Siddha System of medicine is one of the ancient traditional Indian system of medicine refers Insomnia as “Thookaminmai”. In the Siddha text Noiillaneri describes the effects of Insomnia.
Materials and Methods: In this present study a female patient 45 years aged presented with complaints of difficulty falling asleep, including difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position. Waking during the night and being unable to return to sleep. feeling un-refreshed upon waking. daytime sleepiness, irritability or anxiety in the past 10 months. The p a t i e n t was treated with the following internal medicine Amukkura chooranam maathirai -2 with milk BD after food , Bhrami nei-5ml OD with warm milk and along with Varmam manipulation the followingVarmam points are used in insomnia Kondaikolli, Patchineemavarmam, Thilarthakaalam, Adappakaalam, Urakkakaalam, Kuttrivarmam, Saramudichi, Thaadaithataval,Vetrilai kaalam.The patient was treated for 15 weeks and outcome was assessed using PSQI.
Results and Conclusion: The P S Q I score was 21 before treatment and 4 after treatment. The treatment procedure showed positive response byincreasing the duration and quality of sleep pattern.
